The Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo (HASLO) implemented a smoke-free policy on January 1, 2013 that prohibits residents from smoking in all of our public housing units and some of our San Luis Obispo Non-Profit complexes. The ban on smoking will eventually reach all of our housing units.
This ban on smoking is meant to prevent residents from being exposed to second- and third-hand smoke and to protect smoke and fire damage to our properties.
This policy was brought to HASLO by the majority of its residents in an effort to protect them from second-hand smoke which drifts from neighboring units, balconies and outdoor areas.
Additional rationales for smoking restrictions include:
- Reduced risk of fire
- Less cost in rehabbing an empty unit
- Healthier environments for all
- Giving a smoker the incentive to quit
HASLO is one of eighteen California housing authorities to adopt a smoke free policy.
Thank you to the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department/Tobacco Control Program for their efforts to assist us in implementing this policy.
